Should you upgrade to Apple Watch Series 12? Testers say yes from Series 9 or older
Testers praise a Readiness score that shows its reasons and a display that holds up in sun, though battery results ranged from barely 24 hours to 51.

At a glance
Best for: a Series 9 or older owner happy to sleep with it on.
Skip it if: you own a Series 10 or 11; testers suggest waiting a year or skipping.
Reviewers agree: Readiness shows its reasons, but needs about seven nights of sleep wear.
They split on: battery, from barely 24 hours to 51.
Price: starts at $399 on Apple's US store, checked 14 October 2026.
Apple Watch Series 12's Readiness score shows its reasons, and the testers who got it running liked that. Over about three weeks for DC Rainmaker, Ray Maker woke to an 8, watched it fall to 5 after a two-hour ride and to 3 after an evening track session, and could see why. Trusted Reviews' Max Parker, who wore the 46mm model as his main watch, found the scores very close to a WHOOP MG's but gentler in tone, and Macworld's David Price liked a single number that explains itself. The catch is a wait: it needs about seven nights of sleep wear, and Engadget's Cherlynn Low had no score after roughly that long.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
The screen and finishes are everyday pleasures. Maker, who lives on a sunny Mediterranean island, had no trouble seeing the 2,000-nit display, and Parker found it easy to read in daylight yet dim enough at night. Low loved the returning ceramic case, especially in white, and Price, reviewing a black unit, admitted to coveting the bronze. The bezels are the recurring quibble: Parker and Jiří Filip of Letem světem Applem found them obvious on light or colourful watch faces, while Low suggests a lighter case might make them look smaller.[1] [2] [4] [3] [6]
Readiness gets the attention, but small touches add up. Low called the new single-tap gesture possibly her favourite addition to Series 12, which is high praise for a gesture that takes a single tap. Parker used automatic Shazam song detection repeatedly: the watch recognises a song playing nearby without being asked, and he kept coming back to it.[4] [2]
Quick top-ups make sleep tracking easy to plan around: Low's 12-minute charge took her watch from 51% to 79% before an early workout, and Maker found sleep and wake times accurate to about five minutes. Endurance varies by tester. Maker had barely 24 hours in week one and 1 to 1.5 days later, Price logged 51 hours on one full-drain test and 40 on another, and Parker never comfortably passed 36 hours.[4] [1] [3] [2]
The upgrade advice lines up across four testers. Maker would upgrade from anything older than a Series 9 and suggests Series 10 and 11 owners wait a year; Parker says a Series 9 or older has plenty to welcome; Steve Vegvari of iPhone in Canada says Series 11 owners can comfortably skip it. Filip wanted to move from a Series 11 for Readiness alone, then saw 7 or 8 all week while he felt worn out, and calls last year's owners the hardest case.[1] [2] [5] [6]
The Series 12 starts at $399 on Apple's US store, checked 14 October 2026, and needs an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27. If you're on a Series 9 or older and happy to sleep with it on, that advice backs the upgrade. On a Series 10 or 11, watch for the redesigned Health app and Siri Recap, which Low and Price report as still to come.[7] [4] [3]
