Meta Ray-Ban Display's Hologram briefly fooled reporters on WhatsApp, animated by voice alone

A Meta server builds the face from the glasses' microphone audio, and Early Access is planned for US owners on WhatsApp later this fall.

At Meta Connect 2026, a Meta staffer put on Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, walked into another room and placed a WhatsApp video call to UploadVR's David Heaney. For the first few seconds Heaney assumed the man hadn't put the glasses on yet. He was seeing a Hologram, Meta's name for a photorealistic digital copy of your face, and Heaney says it drew a slight gasp. Engadget's Karissa Bell had a similar moment on a call with a rep she'd met minutes earlier: she didn't spot the avatar straight away.[1] [2] [6]

Setup happens on a phone in the Meta AI app. You turn your head, smile and answer open-ended questions aloud, and the capture also records your clothing and background. A 60-second scan, per Android Central's Nicholas Sutrich, is followed by five to ten minutes of server-side processing. On calls, UploadVR reports, a real-time diffusion model on Meta's servers turns microphone audio into the video the other person sees. Meta says the model infers your expression from what you say and how you say it, so the glasses need no view of your face.[1] [3] [6] [5]

Road to VR's Scott Hayden found Meta Reality Labs director Sofien Bouaziz's Hologram, which took a few attempts, indistinguishable from the live man he'd seen moments earlier. Hayden's own copy gave itself away fairly quickly, yet he thought it could fool someone who didn't know him. Bell felt a real sense of presence, and Sutrich called the results uncanny and a massive leap in quality. Your own face is the hardest audience: Bell's avatar grinned more than she does, as two people who know her confirmed, and Gizmodo's James Pero thought his smile was off and his eyes a little too wide.[4] [2] [3] [5]

Meta pitches the hands-free angle: a relative watching you cook, with no phone propped up. Bell says the Meta reps she met often join work calls as their avatars, a nice option in her view when you're not camera-ready. Heaney wonders whether loved ones will want a synthetic you on their screens, Pero expects people who see you often to notice the strangeness, and Hayden says the in-lens display is so small that the call suits smartphone users more than Display wearers.[6] [2] [1] [5] [4]

Meta says Early Access reaches US owners on WhatsApp later this fall, and its newsroom post still said so on 13 October 2026. Everything above comes from staged demos, and Engadget calls it an early preview with bugs to fix. The person you call gets a cue: a transparent watermark per Engadget, a ghost icon per Road to VR. Meta told Gizmodo a likeness stays private to its owner, which is a company assurance. First reports from owners will show how it holds up on a call with someone who knows your face.[6] [2] [4] [5]
