Smart ring sizing: test the hand, not just the number

A smoother interior can still be bulky against a barbell. Generational sizing kits and real wear accounts help expose that before you order.

A ring that slides on comfortably at lunchtime can feel different after a night's sleep. Oura's current fitting instructions recommend wearing the correct generation's plastic sizer for at least 24 hours, including overnight. Ring 4 and Ring 5 have different kits, and neither should be chosen from a familiar jewellery size alone. The plastic is a sizing tool: it does not reproduce the finished ring's weight and surface exactly.[1]

James Stables' October 2024 three-week Oura Ring 4 review at Wareable illustrates why internal and external comfort deserve separate attention. The recessed sensors felt smoother and the lower weight helped, but he still found RingConn Gen 2 and Galaxy Ring thinner on the finger. His gold Ring 4 picked up scratches during weights sessions. Removing raised sensors improves one contact point; it does not shrink the whole ring around your hand.[2] [3]

Leon Poultney reached the grip problem from everyday use in his February 2026 Stuff review. He wore Ring 4 for weeks and found it less cumbersome than a watch in bed, but a strength routine produced discomfort where it pressed into his hand, as well as surface scratches. His account explains a reason to remove a ring for some activities, rather than assuming a comfortable sleeping fit also suits a loaded bar.[4]

For RingConn, Marko Maslakovic's four-month account at Gadgets & Wearables found size 11 worked similarly on his Gen 1 and Gen 2. He also changed hands for exercise when he wanted a different fit. That is a useful account of his two rings, not a conversion table for Oura or another brand. RingConn's own current instructions warn that dimensions differ across brands and may differ across models.[5] [6]

Conor Allison's October 2024 Gen 2 review at Wareable praised the thinner, lighter profile and how little it bothered him during wear. He was less convinced about the finish's resistance to scratches over time. Different reviewers' fingers, finishes and activities can explain different impressions without either account being wrong. Width and thickness belong beside size in a comparison; the number inside the ring does not describe those sensations.[7]

Try the manufacturer sizer while typing, holding a mug and doing your usual hand movements, then leave it on overnight as instructed. Test the intended finger on both hands if either could work. Confirm the kit's generation and the seller's size-exchange terms before selecting a finish. If the fit feels uncomfortable, ask the maker for fitting help instead of forcing yourself to tolerate it for the sake of a sensor reading.
