ANC or open-ear: choose what you want to hear around you
A quieter train and an audible conversation call for different designs. The compromises show up in reviewers' fit, traffic and wind observations.

HUAWEI FreeClip 2 let What Hi-Fi?'s team hear traffic and conversation clearly. That same openness let traffic rumble cover music and podcasts. In Kashfia Kabir's January 2026 review, adaptive volume made playback more audible in heavy traffic but also gave the sound a processed edge. That openness helps with conversation, but works against escaping transport noise.[1]
Sealed earbuds give ANC a different starting point. In Harley Maranan's 2025 SoundGuys AirPods Pro 3 review, the lab's average noise reduction was strong, but the team stressed that poor fit could undermine the result. The new tips sat deeper and held more securely for him than before, yet sweat still caused slipping. Read ANC charts alongside the fitting account: the fixture's ear and your ear are unlikely to be identical.[2]
Leaving the canal open also lets some music travel outwards. Harry Padoan's TechRadar LinkBuds Open test found enjoyable vocals and useful ambient awareness, but his colleague heard significant leakage when volume rose. Those observations came from weeks of home, office and walking use. If you share a quiet desk or train carriage, hearing your colleague does not necessarily mean your colleague wants to hear your playlist.[3]
An open neckband can avoid loose earbuds during a run while creating trouble elsewhere. Lil Katz found the OpenRun Pro 2 stable on her neighbourhood runs and rides during her November 2024 one-week SoundGuys test. Lying back for weight training shifted the band, and a cycling helmet could move it. In a loud gym, she preferred sealed earbuds because the open pair left the clatter audible. The activity and the noise environment both matter.[4]
The product wording needs a careful read. Huawei lists call noise cancellation for FreeClip 2, which concerns speech sent to the other person; it does not mean the wearer gets sealed-earbud ANC. Its official endurance is nine hours for music and six for calls under different lab conditions. A microphone feature and a playback feature may share the phrase 'noise cancellation' while doing different jobs.[5]
For a commute dominated by transport rumble, start with a sealed ANC fit and test it on your normal route. For low-pressure background listening with frequent conversation, try an open design. For running, add your hat and glasses to the fitting check. Transparency modes offer another option, but still depend on powered microphones and the chosen settings. Keep the pair that works during the awkward parts of the day, not only during a quiet demonstration.
